On Sunday we made it to the Place Vendome in first place and had a huge celebration after our success. We would like to thank all our followers for the support over the journey. We would also like to thank Jason and Phill as well as all the other wonderful people from burkes metal works in Christchurch. Also a big thank you to Gavin and Grenville who also helped make the car the beast that it is. We look forward to coming home to share all the stories of our journey with you all.
Today we had another touring day. There were 5 trials scheduled but they only went through with 2 of them. We still went pretty quick but didn’t take any risks. They cancelled the afternoon trials because they underestimated the distance and time to get to the hotel so we spent the last part of the day in traffic on the highway between the mountains rather then on the mountains. We finally drove over last pass into town and we had snow! Its the middle of summer here and we were that high that there was snow on the side of the road! Our hotel tonight is more fancy than i could have ever imagined. I took my hat off at dinner because i feel it would be appropriate and before i noticed the ‘butlers’ had moved a whole other table behind me to hold my dirty old white hat. It was slightly embarrassing. With all this ‘class’ also comes a cost! Mike ordered a 500 ml bottle of water without thinking and got a bill for 18 euros! Anyway no complains from us! Our dinner was amazing and the bed are super comfy so should be a good night sleep if i can fall asleep before the snoring starts.
Rally competition has been getting serious and there has been a lot of accidents as a result. Since my last post there has been 4 rally cars involved in accidents! The stages are tough and the roads are extreemly hairy. Luckily we have managed to stay safe and keep our lead. Our last day in slovenia was a hot one but we were treated with some amazing scenery in the mountains. We barely spent any time going straight! It seemed to be switchbacks all day. At some stages i recall looking down the ravines at full speed and thinking that there is certain death down the side. Anyway after a long day we had a nice dinner with Jim and Tanya as well as mike and Andrew. Todays drive to San Martino di Castrozza was a real challenge. It rained so much that the car started filling with water. I recall dad saying that his balls were floating! Our seats were that wet that if i had farted it would have made bubbles! Anyway we had thousands of switchback up and down lots of mountains all day. On one of the competitive stages we started in thick fog and finished above the clouds. The scenery was amazing but we were under extreme time pressure so there was no time to look. We made it in to the final control with seconds to spare. Tonight our hotel is at a ski field which is very spectacular and tomorrow we move into Switzerland.
